Niche Photographic Works

The Niche in nature refers to an organisms' role and function within an ecological community. It is the role acted out by a lichen on a rock or a trout cruising against the current of a stream. In the human world the niche pertains to one's vocation or bailiwick. Niche Photographic Works exists where these ideas converge, where the photographer meets the world of nature.

I am James Wood and my goal is to share this confluence of Niches. Working from my home studio in Santa Fe, NM I have begun to focus on the existence of roles in nature. Even a circle of grass on the desert floor has some purpose beyond what we see.

Eliot Porter once said,"Sometimes you can tell a large story with a tiny subject". When I think of a niche I think of a small forest of moss beneath a tree trunk or a lone bush within an expanse of grass. These tiny things in nature perform an enormous role in what we cannot view with our own eyes. It has become my niche to look at these existences and to photograph what we cannot yet see.
